Attorney J. Stephen Grooms

was selected to the prestigious “Super Lawyers” list as a South Carolina “Rising Star” in the field of criminal defense. Grooms has spent nearly 10 years practicing in criminal law and is being recognized for his experience, results and peer reviews.

Grooms spent nearly six years with the Horry County Solicitor’s Office before leaving in 2016 to open Grooms and Thomas, LLC with fellow former prosecutor Austin Thomas. Grooms had a successful career as a prosecutor, being promoted to a Senior Assistant Solicitor where he managed a team of trial attorneys handling charges ranging from Driving Under the Influence offenses to major criminal charges such as Drug Trafficking and Murder. He was recognized by the Office as the “Solicitor of the Year” for his work in 2013 and was awarded the statewide John R. Justice award in 2014 which is given to one candidate each year out of the entire State of South Carolina.

In private practice Grooms work ethic, attention to detail and personal relationships with his clients has led to a successful practice yielding many positive outcomes. Grooms takes pride in developing a personal relationship with each client he represents, he takes the time to listen and is a strong advocate for his clients from start to finish. While Grooms handles a wide variety of criminal offenses, he has a passion for representing young people and students at the Coastal Carolina University who have been arrested and find themselves in need of representation.
